Questions

The reports, the subscription, your account, Trout Bot, and the flies. If yours is not here, the contact page reaches a person.

The reports

What is a local report?

A write up from a day on the water, or from watching the gauges, by people who live here and fish as often as they can. We fish what we can and report what we fish: the Animas, the San Juan below Navajo Dam, the Piedra, the Los Pinos, the Dolores, and the high country, whichever the week allows. Each report carries the day's facts (date, water, flow, water temperature, what the fish were eating) and says what worked and what did not.

What is the difference between a free report and a subscriber report?

Free reports are open to everyone, top to bottom. Subscriber reports show everyone the photo, the day's facts, and the opening lines, and the rest is for subscribers: the flies, the rigging, the water that fished, and the pull quotes on flows and flies.

How often are reports posted?

When there is something to say: after a day on the water, or when the gauges tell a story worth passing on, like a big flow change. We report what we fish, so some waters get more reports than others. Each report is dated, so you can always tell how fresh it is. There is no fixed schedule and no filler.

Will a report tell me exactly where to fish?

Not down to the pool. Reports name the river and the general stretch, like the Animas in town or the quality water on the San Juan, and stop there. Specific spots stay out on purpose, and Trout Bot follows the same rule.

Where do the flow numbers come from?

Straight from the USGS and Colorado Division of Water Resources gauges, updated through the day. The numbers on the home page and in each report are live readings, marked provisional by those agencies. If a gauge is down the site says unavailable rather than guessing.

The subscription

What does a subscription cost?

$10.00 a month or $60.00 a year, which is two months free. It renews automatically at the same price until you cancel.

What do I get?

Every report in full, the day it is posted, plus 25 Trout Bot questions a day instead of 3, and Trout Bot can quote the full reports when it answers you.

How do I cancel?

From your account page, with the Manage subscription button, which opens Stripe's billing page. Cancel there and you keep full access to the end of the period you already paid for, then it stops and you are not billed again.

Do I need a subscription to make an account?

No. An account is free and gets you the free reports, Trout Bot, the trip log, and your favorite waters. Subscribe whenever you want the full reports.

What if a payment fails?

The full reports pause until a payment goes through. Stripe retries your card and emails you, and updating your card from the account page brings your access back as soon as it clears.

Is this a newsletter?

No. Nothing is emailed to you on a schedule. The reports live on the site, and you read them when you want. The only emails are your sign in links, receipts from Stripe, and replies when you write to us.

Accounts and signing in

Why is there no password?

You type your email and we send you a link that signs you in. Nothing to remember and nothing to leak. The link works once and expires, so if it has gone stale, ask for a new one.

The sign in email did not arrive.

Give it a minute and check spam or promotions. It comes from hello@durangoflycompany.com. If it still has not shown up, try again from the sign in page, and if that fails, write to us from the contact page and we will sort it out.

Can I use the same account on my phone and my computer?

Yes. Sign in on each device once and it stays signed in. Your favorites, trip log, and Trout Bot history follow you.

How do I delete my account?

Email hello@durangoflycompany.com from the address on your account and ask. We delete the account, the trip log, favorites, and Trout Bot conversations within thirty days and confirm when it is done.

Trout Bot

What is Trout Bot?

A fishing assistant that reads the live flows, the forecast, the local reports, and your own trip log before it answers. Ask it where to fish this week, what to tie on, or send it a photo of a fly or a bug. It gets 3 questions a day with a free account and 25 with a subscription.

Is it ever wrong?

Yes, and it says so when it is unsure. It is a second opinion built on real data, not a guide. Trout Bot has its own FAQ inside the app with more detail on what it knows and how it handles photos.

The flies

When can I buy flies?

The winter box is being tied now and goes on sale this winter. Until then the flies page shows the patterns we fish and Trout Bot recommends, so you can tie or buy them elsewhere in the meantime.

Who ties them?

We do, by hand, in Durango, in the sizes and colors that work on these rivers. No bulk imports.

How does shipping work?

USPS First Class, $5.00 flat, free on orders over $40.00. United States only for now.

What if my order arrives damaged or wrong?

Email hello@durangoflycompany.com within fourteen days of delivery with a photo and we replace it at no cost. Flies are tied by hand and cannot be resold once handled, so there are no returns or exchanges beyond that.

The company

Is there a shop I can visit?

No. Durango Fly Company is a website and a fly tying business, not a storefront. The reports, Trout Bot, and the flies are all online. For anything else, the contact page reaches a person.

Who is behind this?

A group of Fort Lewis College alumni who stayed in Durango and fish the Animas, the San Juan, and the high country as often as life allows. We tie the flies and write the reports. The Home Water page tells the rest.

Do you guide?

Not through the site. Reports and Trout Bot are meant to help you fish on your own. If that changes, it will be announced here first.

Still wondering? Leave a message and we will get back to you. Trout Bot’s own questions are answered inside the app.

Gone fishing

Out of town, chasing saltwater.

We are away on a saltwater adventure, so there will be no new reports until November. The live flows, Trout Bot, and every report so far are all still here.
